The Olympic Stadium, designed by architect Pere Domènech i Roura, was inaugurated in 1929 as part of the Barcelona International Exposition. It was intended to host the 1936 Olympic Games, but the political situation at the time prevented this, and the stadium gradually fell into disuse. Half a century later, thanks to Barcelona’s Olympic bid, the stadium was brought back to life by a team of architects consisting of Gregotti, Correa, Milán, Margarit, and Buixadé. In 1985, full renovation works began, equipping the stadium with facilities and services to host the Olympic Games. The works preserved the façade, which still retains its original appearance.

The new Olympic Stadium was inaugurated in 1989 for the 5th World Athletics Cup. Three years later, the stadium became the flagship venue of the 1992 Olympic Games, hosting the opening and closing ceremonies and the athletics events.

For the 20th European Athletics Championships in 2010, the stadium underwent further refurbishment, in which Mabelux Technic took part by bending and manufacturing the stadium’s curved windows using Schüco AWS 60 aluminium profiles.
